94 Rutledge Street Guest House
Historic homes have always been in demand in the Charleston Historic District regardless of the state of the economy. I have profiled just a few of the recent historic home sales in The Charleston Historic District.
The Isaac J. Mikell House at 94 Ritledge Ave. sold on March 20, 2008 for $4,800,000. It had been listed for sale at $5,995,000. This 4 bedroom 4 full and 2 half bath Greek Revival style home of almost 9500 square feet was built in 1853. An attached 3 bedroom 2 bath guest house as well as a one bedroom one bath coach house were included in the sale. This historic Greek Revival home featured an updated master bath, gourmet kitchen, walled formal garden, off street parking for 6+ cars and swimming pool on a one half acre lot. The home was purchased by Patricia Altschul who was married to Arthur G. Altschul, a well known Wall Street executive, art collector and philanthropist who dies six years ago. Ms. Altschul plans to keep her current New York home but move to Charleston permanently according to a local Charleston Realtor. The historic Charleston house was built by cottom planter Isaac Jenkins Mikell for his third wife. It was used as a county library between 1936 and 1960. A Philadelphia couple purchased and renovated the home and later sold it to the Historic Charleston Foundation. The Foundation later sold it to a private individual with the home changing hands over the years. A local Realtor owned the home in the early 1980's.
